Yes!! Vic’s Bagels is making gluten free bagels every day. WARNING: get there early because they are gone by about 11am. I call and ask now before arriving since I am not fortunate enough to be in delivery range! I have tried the Everything flavor so far but plan to check out Sesame next time. They also have plain.
I was a bit rusty trying to select toppings as Vic’s is a true NYC bagel shop where they mix the flavored cream cheese by hand per order and have about 30 toppings that you can add to your bagel. Of course they have peanut butter and everything else you would expect. They mix everything fresh in steel bowls for each person. The second time around I did better selecting exactly what I wanted. I will be heading back there post-pregnancy to get a lox bagel!
If you remember what gluten bagels taste like I would say these are a bit heavier. But they are much truer to the taste and texture of a bagel than Joan’s Frozen Bagels which I consider to be pretty good.
Vic’s has modified its procedures to make the shop more gluten free friendly in recent weeks between my visits. Now the staff only cuts gluten free bagels on an exclusive cutting board. They will not toast them because as of this writing they do not have an exclusive toaster. They create whatever you want cream cheese wise and put it in a side container to avoid any contamination. The also make these bagels first in the morning to avoid cross-contamination during baking. I believe someone with a more reactive allergy than mine could eat there based on their practices.
The man making my bagel told me someone got sick a few weeks ago and since that happened they have adjusted things. I felt so thankful for VIC at that moment!! Even though he is also a celiac – kudos for keeping the operation going!
